Backstretch Beat
by Paul Volponi
Observation Deck: Lemon Drop Kid's decisive victory in
the Whitney at Saratoga has clearly stamped him as the number
one thoroughbred on these shores. Behrens is not the same horse
as he was last year. However, he has helped the backers of Lemon
Drop Kid get a square price in their encounters. I would advise
betting against Behrens in his next encounter too, and leave
him out of your exactas.
Saratoga Watch: Copelan Too scores on the front end.
This Fleet Is Due will break his maiden next out. Affirmed Success
continue to roll on the grass. Volponi is set to score on the
turf at a distance. Left Bank has been well managed by trainer
Pletcher and should continue winning ways. Vision will go wire
to wire for Lukas. Tropical Punch is steady, ready and solid
as they come.
Jockey Insights: Jerry Bailey has proven that he is human
after all. He has lost some close photos at the wire and
encountered some bad trips. While the betting focus is off
him a bit, you may be able to secure a decent price on some
selected mounts. Take advantage of this now before the best
rider in the world heats up again. Jockey Robbie Davis is
enjoying a fine meeting at the Spa. Keep backing him!
Trainers: Hot Barns- Rich Schosberg, Mitch Friedman, Del
Carroll and Neil Howard. Cold Barns- Gary Sciacca, Carl Nafzger,
Allen Jerkens and Louis Albertrani. Over Bet- Trainer Bill
Mott continues to send out good stock that is way over bet
by the public. Go against his horses for better value.
